How I Do It

Description

Just wanted to share this. original artist is :iconmiacabrera:
My colors.

First rule: Layer, Layers, and then Layers.
I always lay my flats like this before I proceed with my details. Once my flats are all layed down (each individual item that has color is on it's on layer to keep from screwing up-and it offers the benefit of changing it without changing everything near or around it), I start going in with my brush, which can be a hard or soft brush (your choice) and I lower the opacity of my brush to suit my needs for depth and lighting. Generally, when your flats are darker, it's much easier to bring up the depth of the surface of what you are coloring with the lighter values of your hue (green on the skins, for instance). I continue with this same process for every individual layer until I reach MY desired result for the image. I did not smooth this particular image out with and blending or smudging tool, because I wanted a rough textured look, and I think overall I was successful with that. I do see a few things that could use tweeking, but, this was totally something fun to do between commissions and sequential colors on other projects. So, I hope you guys enjoy this (rare) look into how I do what I do. Later!!!! Oh, and Much Love to Eddie Nunez for throwing down on this piece. That dude is sick, and Reilly Brown said that he is the coolest dude, so, I really need to sit down and color some more of his stuff. I envy his artistic style. Later!
